Bob Dylan Gets Soy Bombed (1998)
During Bob Dylan’s performance of “Love Sick,” artist Michael Portney made the strangest political statement since “what’s the frequency, Kenneth” when he stepped out of his role as background dancer, tore off his shirt, and revealed the words “SOY BOMB” written across his chest. Apparently a comment on the state of music, the act fazed Dylan, but only momentarily — after an initial double-take, he kept playing through Portnoy’s eventual removal from the stage.
The Prince Show is Born (2004)
We’re a fan of just about everything Beyonce and Prince to start with, so the two of them? Performing a medley at the Grammys? Already a win. But the Saturday Night Live skit this duet spawned is what really puts it over the top when it comes to Grammy lore. It‘s the Prince show, y‘all, so as Fred Armisen and Maya Rudolph sang, “jump under the waterfall and climb the rainbow tree.”
