There are certain universal truths most women know by the age of 25. They help us out as we dress, shop and get ready for the day or night ahead in a comforting sort of mantra. We wear black to look thinner, big sunglasses to hide circles, a ponytail on bad-hair days, Spanx to flatten bloat, dark polish to look edgy, killer heels to look sexy, double-sided tape to keep bare necklines from slipping, a nude molded bra to make nipples disappear in white tees. And every season we add to that stockpile of wisdom as products and research evolve. Here are 10 foolproof beauty tips to add to your arsenal for fall 2009.

1. A black or dark blue pencil rimming upper and lower lids shmushed with a Q-tip then slightly cleaned up with another will give you a subtle, fast, smoky rocker-chick eye without any shadow, and it won’t look as subversive for day.


2. Hide growing-out bangs with a modified pompadour effect at the crown that adds a little poufy height to half-up-half-down styles and ponytails. The more extreme look was hot at Vivienne Tam, Zac Posen, Lela Rose and Behnaz Sarafpour and was spotted on trendsetter diva Norma Kamali recently whose bangs were a trademark for years.
