Elena Kagan

Although Elena Kagan, President Obama’s nomination for the 112th Supreme Court Justice, is a powerhouse in legal circles (she served as Dean of Harvard Law School,  after all) most of us know very little about her beyond the biographical sketches we’ve seen in the media. Here are some facts about Kagan that are going to be news to you:

1.  From her teens, she had one goal in mind. Natalie Bowden, a classmate of Kagan’s at the prestigious Hunter College High School in Manhattan, said the young Elena’s ambition was to be a Supreme Court Justice (By the way another well-known graduate of the school is actress Cynthia Nixon of Sex and the City.)

2. She has a Master of Philosophy degree from Oxford University.

3. Her social circle at Princeton University, where she got a history degree summa cum laude, included former New York governor Eliot Spitzer. While in office, Spitzer, who resigned following a sex scandal, appointed Kagan to a commission on higher education.

  1. I’m so glad to see more smart, hardworking women like this in the public eye. I wish everyone would stop talking about her sexuality though – it shouldn’t matter who she dates or why she isn’t married!

  2. ummm… are you serious? she’s been appointed by a cheating perv, has never served in the judicial system, and has ideology that is against the US Constitution and unanimously voted against by the Court itself… how is she a good fit again?

I completely agree w/ uptowngirl though, ppl should stop talking a/b her sexuality. They should be talking a/b her Constitutional views.

  3. I wish people would catch up with the times and stop making a big deal out of people’s sexuality. It has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not she is capable of doing her job. It’s ridiculous.
