12 Olympians Who Have Danced With the Stars on ‘Dancing With The Stars’

Has anyone else noticed the strange connection between Olympic athletes and ‘Dancing With the Stars?’

As you may have noticed, the 2012 Summer Olympics are currently in full swing in London. Ever since Friday’s show-stopping opening ceremony, we here at BettyConfidential have been glued to our televisions every waking moment (and some sleeping moments, too), just to make sure we don’t miss any spectacular soccer matches or unbelievable gymnastics routines.

But something just occurred to us: Have you ever noticed how many Olympians have ended up on Dancing With the Stars? In some ways, this probably shouldn’t be that surprising—the show combines athleticism with fame and pop culture, which, as we all know, is a no-fail recipe for success—but at the same time, it does seem like a little bit of a funny coincidence. In an effort to understand the connection a little better, we took a moment to round all of the Olympic athletes who have also appeared on the show. Ready to dance your gold medals off? Here we go!

1. Natalie Coughlin – Swimmer

Natalie Coughlin

Current 2012 United States Olympic swim team member Natalie Coughlin has medaled in the Games not once, not twice, but eleven whopping times. In 2008, she became the first American female athlete in modern Olympic history to win six medals in one Olympics, as well as the first woman ever to win a 100-meter backstroke gold in two consecutive Olympics. Unfortunately, her impressive pedigree didn’t help her win DWTS—she was eliminated sixth during the show’s 9th season.

2. Hope Solo – Soccer Player

Hope Solo

Hope (who, by the way, we adore) helped lead the US Olympic soccer team to a gold medal victory in 2008, and we have great hopes that this fantastic goalkeeper will pull in a repeat performance in this year’s Games. She partner with Maksim Chmerkovskiy in the 13th season of DWTS, making it all the way to the semi-finals round before being eliminated.

3. Evan Lysacek – Figure Skater

Evan Lysacek

Figure skater Evan Lysacek scored the Olympic gold in the men’s singles event in 2010—the first American man to do so since Brian Boitano in 1988. He also placed fourth in the 2006 Games. And yet—somehow—Nicole Scherzinger managed to beat him in DWTS’s 10th season. How? No idea. Oh well; second place isn’t too bad!
