There’s nothing more American than baseball and underdogs (except maybe for the aforementioned apple pie, but whatever), and when it comes to movies featuring both, it doesn’t get much better than A League of Their Own. Conversely, substitute Moneyball—or better yet, have a marathon and watch them both back to back. Home run!
5. Men In Black
For a very long time, I associated the 4th of July with Will Smith, probably because I spent several years celebrating by going to the movies with my family and seeing Will Smith flicks. Men In Black was the second of those years; released in 1997, it came out one year after 1996’s Independence Day, and like Independence Day, it was about aliens. Go figure.
6. The Patriot
There haven’t been many blockbusters about the Revolutionary War—maybe it has something to do with the whole men-in-tights thing—but hey, at least there’s one! With Mel Gibson in the lead, it kind of comes off as Braveheart: The American Edition, but oh well. Can’t have everything.
