Helen Mirren Reveals the Inspiration Behind Her New Pink ‘Do
Wondering where Dame Helen Mirren got the idea to dye her hair pink? The actress dished on her inspiration on the BAFTA red carpet. Get the scoop here!
Love or it or hate it, there’s no denying that Dame Helen Mirren’s brand new, bubblegum pink locks are a statement. However, it is, shall we say, not terribly common for a lady of her years to color her hair such a bold and edgy shade (“little old ladies with blue hair” jokes not withstanding). So where did she get the idea to do it? The answer might surprise you—in fact, it might surprise you almost as much as the fact that she’s an America’s Next Top Model fan!
That’s right: According to People, Dame Helen revealed on the BAFTA red carpet, “I saw it on America’s Next Top Model, so I decided to have a go.” She elaborated on her thoughts for the Huffington Post, noting, “I just thought it would be fun to dye my hair pink. I mean, honestly, I was watching America’s Next Top Model and the season where there were the British girls. Well, the British girl who won, she had pink hair, and I thought: ‘That looks really pretty.’ So I’m copying her, basically.”
The British girl in question, by the way, is Sophie Sumner; a runner-up on Britain’s Top Model in 2009 (cycle five, for those of you who keep track), the now-23-year-old model won America’s Next Top Model: British Invasion (cycle eighteen) in 2012. According to HuffPo, Sophie “had no idea” that she inspired Helen’s new look, calling it “extremely flattering.” She went on to say, “She is an extremely beautiful woman and I think pink looks absolutely gorgeous on her.”
Although she missed out on the Best Leading Actress BAFTA to Emanuelle Riva, Dame Helen wasn’t too cut up about it. Even before the winners were announced, she said to People, “I know I won’t win tonight, but I’m going to have lots of fun and celebrate anyway.” And what better way to do that than with candy-colored hair?
