Take one peek at Alicia Keys professional accomplishments and you’ll have to acknowledge that this girl is on fire. Over the past decade, this 32-year-old songstress has sold millions of album copies, earned several Grammy Awards, and earned a coveted spot on VH1’s list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. And Keys didn’t climb to the top without forging her own path and taking risks.

“I had a vision for myself and felt I wasn’t allowed to express it, because people always want to tell you, ‘Do it like this, don’t do that, you should do this, you can’t do that’,” she told the Telegraph. “So I did feel like I had to control it. I had to claim my space. It was about demanding respect, saying ‘Here’s what I want’, and pushing people as opposed to being pushed around. I found that if you acted like you knew what you were doing, people would believe you knew what you were doing.”
