Thinking about spicing up your locks before Valentine’s Day? We can help! We’ve teamed up with celebrity colorist Meghan Frayne of New York’s Angelo David Salon to get the scoop on the hottest Valentine’s Day hair trends. From blunt cut bangs to warm, red-toned shades, find out everything you need to know before Thursday’s big night!

Betty Confidential: Let’s cut to the chase! What are some of the hottest hair colors for the 2013 Valentine’s season?

Meghan Frayne: Anything within the warm red tones works very well during Valentine’s Day. There is something alluring, an almost “come-hither” quality, with those hues. Cherry, mocha and soft copper tones are a few examples of colors that will suit perfectly for your most romantic day.

BC: We’ve all made beauty mistakes! But can you school us on some do’s and don’ts when it comes to choosing a shade?

MF: Do consider your skin tone and eye color when selecting a color. Make sure it complements your features. Remember, just because you liked what you see in the magazine doesn’t necessarily mean it will suit you. If you’re thinking of becoming blonde, choose a color that won’t make your face and hair color appear monochromatic.

BC: What should clients know before arriving at the salon when planning to change their hair color to a completely new shade?

MF: A drastic change in color will take a lot of time (and also money). Make sure you have the time invested to proceed. To help your stylist get a better idea of what you want, bring magazine tear sheets of colors that you want.

BC: Brassy and faded color is no fun. What are some tips to preserving and maintaining your hair color after salon application?

MF: Try to wash your hair less frequently, if possible, in order to avoid stripping the color. When washing hair, use products with color protectant qualities such as Pureology Antifade Complex ($28.89, drugstore.com). If necessary, make sure to arm yourself with a heat protectant, like the Angelo David Zero Frizz Control ($19.50, angelodavid.com http://www.angelodavid.com/store/hair-care/) , to keep yout hair looking healthy.

BC: How can you spice up your color even more on your special Valentine’s night out?

MF: A few highlights around the face can help frame the face beautifully, making you look extra special on this romantic evening.

BC: What are some hot cuts to compliment your new color?

JF: Bangs (whether blunts or wispy) are becoming such a huge trend lately; they’re a perfect way to spice up your look. Of course, long, loose waves always give you a sexy vibe, perfectly suited for your romantic evening. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to explore hair extensions (like the Angelo David Couture Extensions that are specially customized for you) as a means of getting long, sexy hair overnight to get you ready for your perfect date.
