1. Work with what you have, because what you have is fabulous.
It doesn’t matter what shape you are. It doesn’t matter what age you are. Whatever you are, you are fabulous, and the key to looking as fabulous as we know you are is learning what you’ve got and how to work WITH it—not against it, and without trying to hide behind anything.
2. Think outside the box.
Don’t think brightly colored, printed dresses are your thing? Try it on anyway. Haven’t worn a blazer with super architectural shoulders before? Try it on anyway. Not used to wearing skinny jeans? Try them on anyway. You never know—by stepping outside the box, you might find that your new favorite item of clothing is something you never, ever thought you’d wear.
3. Embrace change, even when it’s scary.
ESPECIALLY when it’s scary. How else are you going to keep growing?
4. The clothes don’t make the woman; the woman makes the clothes.
Not in the literal sense (unless you’re super skilled with a sewing machine, in which case, props to you!). I’m talking about the old adage that “the clothes make the man.” In some ways this is true—it’s not too dissimilar from the whole “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” philosophy—but instead of having what you wear define who you are, I prefer to think of it as what you wear reflecting the best parts of yourself.
