Katniss’ Wedding Dress Designer Revealed (And It’s Not Alexander McQueen)
Wondering who designed Katniss’ wedding dress for ‘The Hunger Games: Cactching Fire?’ We found out—and it’s not Alexander McQueen!
Remember that image of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire that dropped earlier this week as part of Capitol Couture’s Capitol Portraits series (which, by the way, we’re still updating as more emerge)? In it, she was wearing one heck of a wedding dress, which in the book is designed for her by Cinna. But who’s the mastermind behind the stunning design in real life? We found out—and contrary to popular belief, it’s not Alexander McQueen!
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with costume designer Trish Summerville on her way back from Hawaii, where she was doing pick up shots for Catching Fire. Revealed Trish, “Katniss’ white gown is by a designer named Tex Saverio in Jakarta. He is amazing! I found his designs quite some time ago and saved his information for a perfectly fitting project; then came Catching Fire—perfect!”
Haven’t heard of Tex? You’ve probably seen his work before: Lady Gaga wore one of his gowns in a 2011 issue of Harper’s Bazaar, and Kim Kardashian sported one in her recent Elle shoot. Who knew?
As beautiful as the dress is, though, we’re not sure we’d ever want to wear it—the bodice is essentially an organza corset under a metal cage and adorned with Swarovski crystals. The metal pieces rising up bring to mind flames licking upwards (it IS called Catching Fire, after all), and the feathers at the waist and shoulder reflect the Mockigngjay symbolism that’s so important for the series. For the curious, Effie Trinket’s (Elizabeth Banks) red ruffled dress and shoes ARE Alexander McQueen, and Peeta’s (Josh Hutcherson) suit is by a Korean designer called Juunj.
Love Katniss’ look, but wish it was a little more wearable for non-wedding situations? Try this inspired ensemble on for size!
