Diana Denza, Contributing Editor:
Though they’re 1,000 miles away (literally), my two beautiful baby sisters inspire me every single day. They’ve grown into caring, smart, strong, funny young women and I still can’t believe they’ll turn 20 (yes, they’re twins!) in just a few months.
When our mother died unexpectedly when we were children, Suzanne and Stefanie were the ones who kept me from falling apart. When I came out several years later, I called Suzanne and said, “I have something to tell you.” She asked, “Are you pregnant?” “No,” I replied. “Are you gay?” she asked, having known even before I did. We cried together that night, and from that moment on, I knew that everything was going to be okay.
My baby sisters.
Without the unconditional love and support of these two amazing women, I wouldn’t have found to strength to live authentically, pursue a degree in journalism, and follow my heart—even when it told me to bleach my hair in the seventh grade (not my best idea) or take a second job walking an 85 lb. pit bull (a shockingly great idea). No, they’re not ruling the world, but Suzanne and Stefanie are the two people I could never live without.
