April Daniels Hussar, Editorial Director:
One of my fave photos from London, 2001, keeps me company at my desk.
There are many women in my life who deserve appreciation and honoring, but when I think about the people who have truly helped me become the person I am today, I think of my friend Amy. A mom of one, with another on the way, Amy is a public school teacher in Northern California, and I have said on more than one occasion how lucky her students are to have her.
I’ve known Amy since we both worked together at the same cafe in our small hometown, during our somewhat wild and crazy early 20s. We lived together for a while, and sharing a home — and a closet! — with her is right up there with the best times of my life. We dealt with everything from quarter-life-crises to (multiple) heartbreaks to an invasion of rodents together. We threw parties, laid in bed all day watching John Hughes movies, and spent late nights talking and dreaming under the California stars and over red wine. From Amy I learned the true definition of friendship; someone who loves you unconditionally, who forgives you when you act like a total bitch, who always remembers your birthday and never refuses to lend you her favorite shoes.
Amy is someone I can count on for anything, under any circumstances. She has been part of the joys in my life and, more recently, the sorrows. I don’t know how I’d get through life without her love, support, and generosity, and I know I’m not the only one who feels that way.
We don’t live together anymore; in fact, we’ve made our lives on opposite coasts, and I miss those days of easy intimacy, of seeing her face every day — but we’re still as close as ever. We are “aunties” to each others’ daughters, and when we do get together for visits, it’s always a joy and a relief to spend time with someone who know me, the real me — the me who has grown from a lost young woman to a mother, a writer, and a wife, but who will always be that California girl trying to steal lipstick out of my best friend’s purse.
From April 8 to June 30 2013, submit your nominee’s story in 500 words or less to DeserveAffinitas.com or to Affinitas’ Facebook page. After June 30, Affinitas will narrow all the entries down to the Top 20; each nominator who makes it to the Top 20 will then be asked to shot a 5-minute video telling your nominee’s story and how she has positively impacted your life (you’ll have until July 17 to submit your video). Then, from July 22 to October 31, 2013, fans across the country will vote on which of these Top 20 nominees has the most inspiring story, narrowing the list down to the Top 3 Finalists. Finally, Affinitas and guest judges Samantha Lim and GAL Time will select one winner, who will be announced on November 22, 2013.
The winning nominee will receive a $3,000 American Express gift card and one sexy new bra and panty set from Affinitas or Parfait every month for a year, simply for being the fabulous, inspiring person that they are. And to thank you for sharing the story of your hero, the nominator will receive a $500 AmEx gift card.
