In the past I didn’t travel much. However, I recently dealt with back-to-back business trips, and there are quite a few things I learned that I want to pass on. First of all, after dragging a big, heavy rolly suitcase around LA last January, I decided that this time around, I was packing light!

Instead of packing a redic amount of shoes, I packed three. If I hadn’t had a boat trip—I needed rubber soled flats for that—I would have had only two pairs. And yes, I was going out to dinner, clubbing and beyond. Pack a pair of black dressy sandals or a peep-toe. They’ll work for a cocktail party, dinner date, clubbing and even with jeans. Pack (or wear) a shoe in a neutral shade. I packed a mustard colored sandal. Mustard is (believe it or not) a neutral. The shade is also a big trend right now, so it added a bit of dash to everything I paired it with.

Here are the rest of the tips:

Don’t pack these items!

1. Toothbrush and toothpaste

Most hotels now offer toothbrushes and toothpaste free for guests. Call the hotel ahead of time and ask if they do. Most hotels have them all ready in your room. If not, call housekeeping and they’ll send it up to you.

Bonus round: They usually give you two of everything. You can take the extra home. If you’ve got a guest, you can offer them their very own toothbrush and toothpaste!

2. Shaving cream

Awhile back I read somewhere that hair conditioner can double as shaving cream. On a recent business trip I purposely left mine behind to see if it worked. I figured if it didn’t, I could always buy a travel size. Not only will you get an incredibly smooth shave, your skin is super soft and there’s less chance of nicking yourself when you use conditioner!

Bonus round: Have a après-shampoo conditioner at home that you loathe? Use it up as shaving cream.

3. Razors

This is a “check first” item. If the hotel has a spa, they usually place razors, shower caps, even toothbrushes, toothpastes and tampons in the bathroom of the spa. Run down there and stock up. It’s free.

Bonus round: Grab a few (I said “few”—leave some for other people) to take home and use after your trip.
