A doctor in Nebraska has taken up the cause of Dr. George Tiller, the late-term abortion provider who was brutally murdered in a Kansas church by a pro-life activist this past summer.
Dr. LeRoy Carhart of Omaha has begun performing late-term abortions in his clinic, attracting the same kind of furor and controversy as his fallen friend. Carhart even hired two people who worked at Tiller’s office after a few of his employees quit.
“We’re trying to get criminal charges against him, to get his license revoked, and to get legislators there to look at the law,” said Troy Newman, the president of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue. Newman has traveled from Kansas, where Dr. Tiller’s clinic was located and the current Operation Headquaters resides, to Nebraska six times in recent months, leading some to believe that Carhart’s clinic is now the main battleground in the abortion fight.
Carhart is taking every precaution, however, to keep him and his family safe, hiring a full-time security guard at his clinic and rarely going out of the house.
“We do everything differently now,” he said. (NY Times)
