American Idol

On judges and the final four

-Stephanie Elliot

Season Eight of the highest-rated show on TV is winding down in a few weeks, and in case your life has gotten in the way of the guilty pleasure, we thought we’d give you a little info on what you may have missed. And as much as we love Lost and The Office, the show we’re talking about is American Idol!

First up, the judges … Rumors are floating all over the ‘net that this may be Simon Cowell’s last season, as his contract runs out next year. “I have had a great eight years,” said Cowell. “But inevitably you get to a point in life when you think maybe it’s time for a change.”

He jokes that maybe FOX won’t even want him next year, but with an estimated earning of $36 million a season (yes, that is NOT a typo), my guess is Simon may stick it around for a bit more. And besides, who could take his place? The most loved/hated judge has garnered a fan club to rival even the American Idols themselves! I hope to see more of Simon, as he adds so much pizzazz to the show. And that grin of his … !

Paula recently revealed that her contract is up too, but we hope she’s not going anywhere. Watching Paula and Simon go at it on the show is just as exciting as some of the performances, and American Idol would just not be the same without these two stars! Besides, Paula’s “Forever our girl,” but it’s really anybody’s guess as to what road the judges will take when it’s time to renew their contracts.

Newest judge Kara DioGuardi signed on with a one-year contract deal, but there’s been no reports that she’s looking elsewhere. Kara even told Entertainment Tonight: “I didn’t quit. Are you kidding me?! Who quits American Idol? I’m not quitting … I’m having a great time.”

And as for Randy “Yo Dog” Jackson, there have been no reports as to whether he’ll be judging next year or not. Stay tuned.

Last night, by what might be a shock to some, Matt Giraud, 23, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was knocked off, bringing the tally of Idols to the Final Four. Matt has the distinct honor of being the first Idol to have been saved by the judges, a new twist to this season. When the voters decided it was his time to go a few weeks back, the judges vetoed the decision and kept him singing his way to the fifth Idol spot. But not to worry, Matt Giraud fans–the judges all agree there are some amazing opportunities ahead for this glowing star!

  1. The show just wouldn’t be the same without Simon. If he leaves the dynamic of the show goes out the door. It’s like losing Edith on All in the Family, it’s just never the same.

  2. The show would simply tank without Simon. He’s the glue that holds it together. No matter how strong his opinions are, his delivery is always hilarious.

  3. Allison must be 17 now–they referenced her birthday (and Danny’s) last night. Kris is from Arkansas, not Arizona.

I don’t like the banter between Ryan and Simon, but it would be boring without Simon. And Kara hasn’t added much to the show, in my opinion.

  4. KS–“in my opinion” you are the most annoying “troller” out there. Get a freakin’ life. What’s with the chip on your shoulder where you are always telling Betty what’s wrong. You are such a know-it-all, why don’t you just go work for Betty?
