Barack Obama: Why I Love Him

Why one woman is especially thrilled that Barack Obama is running for president.

In Her Words

Why I Love Barack Obama

A change is gonna come

-Jennifer Trannon

I must admit: I love Obama. I don’t mean I love him … but I love that he is running for President.

I’d be lying if I said it has nothing to do with the fact that Senator Obama is Black. I love that my biracial children can look at this man and say, “Wow, I can be anything I want to be!” I love that the senator is shattering some of the stereotypes still plaguing the Black community. And I love what this nomination represents for our country: look how far we’ve come!!

But any old Black man would not have filled me with such excitement: I would elect a thousand John McCains before I put Alan Keyes in the White House. So what do I love about him, other than the color of his skin?

I actually love that Barack Obama began as a community organizer, and not in politics. Being truly in touch with real Americans and their needs is something that is sorely missing in politics today, and working “down in the trenches” has given Obama a perspective that few Washington regulars possess.

I also love that Obama has a limited amount of Washington experience. As far as I can tell, spending more time in Washington has not given any of Obama’s colleagues more integrity or ingenuity. What it has done is complicate their ideals with the games politicians play. Experienced does not necessarily equal more qualified.

Is Obama perfect? Of course not. Has he made mistakes? Sure. I can’t honestly imagine anyone being able to withstand the scrutiny with which our press attacks all candidates. But I believe in Obama. I agree with his stance on most of the major issues. I think he is honest and fiercely intelligent and is committed to shaking up the ‘status quo’ in America today.

In 1963, Sam Cooke wrote the beautifully poignant “it’s been a long time comin’ but I know a change is gonna come.” I can only hope he was talking about Barack Obama.
