“Best Friends” Bracelets Are Hazardous
Jewelry sold at Claire’s is recalled.
High levels of a carcinogen have been found in a $12 bracelet sold across the U.S., prompting a recall of 19,000 items, according to USA Today.
The federal Consumer Products Safety Commission said on Monday that it had ordered the recall of the “Best Friends” charm bracelet sold at Claire’s, the accessory chain that has more than 3,000 stores in North America and Europe.
In January, when independent tests showed high levels of the toxic metal in the bracelets, Claire’s agreed to stop selling the item. The CPSC recall today covers all bracelets that were sold before January.
In addition to being a proven carcinogen, cadmium can also harm the kidneys and bones.
The CPSC asked that customers who bought the jewelry to call 866-859-9281 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or to visit the company’s website at www.claires.com.
As part of a stepped-up program to guard against importing similar items, federal inspectors have expanded X-ray screenings at U.S. ports. (USA Today)
