On Wednesday, a Brazilian court ordered that 9-year-old Sean Goldman be returned to the custody of his father in the United States. However, his Brazilian relatives are expected to try to stop his departure, CNN reported.
In 2004, the boy’s mother Bruna Bianchi took Sean to Brazil for what was supposed to be a 2-week vacation, but ended up staying and remarrying. She died last year in childbirth. The boy’s other relatives, including his Brazilian stepfather, have filed over 40 appeals to keep him in the country, arguing that it would be traumatizing to keep take him away from where he’s lived for most of his life.
Before getting on a Rio-bound plane, Sean’s father, David Goldman, told reporters that the court’s decision to grant him custody, and thereby upholding the Hague Convention on International Child Abduction, had given him hope but he wouldn’t consider his efforts to be successful until he was reunited with his son.
