Break the rules
In the past, short ‘dos were considered a no-no for wavy- and curly-haired women, but Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek have proven you can rock sexy short hair with texture. The key is to cut curly hair when it’s dry so that the cut contours your head, according to Serafino. It also comes down to time commitment. If you have wavy or curly hair and crave that sleek, straight, chin-length bob, are you willing to put in the time to blow it out every day to tame your hair’s texture? Or are you better off going for a medium-length cut with side-swept bang like Kate Moss.
Do you want your hair to whisper, talk or shout?
“If you want your hair to whisper, go for medium-length hair, like Jennifer Love Hewitt,” says Serafino. “If you want hair to talk, go from long hair to chin length. If you want it to shout, crop it short like Halle Berry and Victoria Beckham.”
Go in stages
Once you’ve decided how short you’d like to go, try easing in with a series of two to three progressively shorter cuts, such as from shoulder length to mid-neck to chin-length. This allows you time to adjust to the shorter length – and to put down the scissors if you’re having second thoughts.
