The stars are out for the Inauguration

Obama family

We know the Obamas are getting top billing at the Inauguration festivities, but there will be plenty of extra star power on hand.

Beyonce and Mary J. Blige

Sunday, the big, FREE (keyword FREE) concert will be held at the National Mall, featuring a group of headliners from Beyonce to Garth Brooks to Stevie Wonder. Also on hand: Bruce Springsteen, U2, Usher, John Mellencamp, Shakira, Mary J. Blige, Herbie Hancock, Josh Groban, John Legend and James Taylor. Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Martin Luther King III and Queen Latifah will read. Obama will stop by and HBO will broadcast. If I lived in D.C., this is so where I’d be.

Spike Lee

Director Spike Lee will be at Howard University during this concert speaking of Obama’s impact on Black America. He’ll also be hosting the Inauguration after-party on Tuesday. On the Obamas’ first date they went to a Spike Lee movie.

Miley Cyrus

Monday is the “Kids’ Inaugural: We Are the Future” fest, featuring Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, and Bow Wow. Michelle Obama and Jill Biden are hosting this concert, and Malia and Sasha will be there. This is a great one to watch at home with the kids; it airs on the Disney Channel.

Aretha Franklin

Also on Monday, Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin will play a free concert at the Kennedy Center with Nuttin’ But Stringz and the Let Freedom Ring Choir.

Sheryl Crow

Other Monday night events include The “America Feels Kinda Cool Again Inaugural Gala,” which will feature the Beastie Boys, Sheryl Crow and Citizen Cope. And Jay-Z will perform a concert – “In Concert on the Eve on Change” – at the Warner Theater.

Now I wonder what Oprah’s secret plans are…

  1. This is what the Democratic party is about and unfortunately what BO is about thus far–symbolism over substance. I could care less about rock concerts and superstars, we need steadfast leadership and freedom. Unfortunately for us, the other side of the Democratic equation is the era of Socialism that we are entering full bore for the first time in US history. It is a shame that most of the younger generation has absolutely no idea of what Socialism is or what it means to their freedoms and pocket book. God willing, when “they” find out, they will learn and help usher out what is coming in the next few years.

  2. I think there can be an appreciation for politics and pop culture. Spike Lee is a life altering, political film director, and it’s also amazing that so many diverse celebrities are all celebrating Obama’s victory.
