The Great (Cheap) Holiday Escape

‘Tis the season to flee, or at least to take advantage travel deals

-Mary Beth Sammons

mother in daughter in a poolIn these days of economic uncertainty and turbulence, the temptation may be to hunker down at home and bury yourself in job worries and a list of other woes.

But resist the impulse. It’s time to tap into your inner adventurer, pack your bags and plan a holiday getaway. According to The New York Times, the continued global financial turmoil is creating some good news in the form of last-minute gifts for bargain-seeking travelers. Resorts, airlines and exotic lodgings across the globe face sluggish bookings.

That’s awesome news for those of us who are tired of spending our holidays cooking and cleaning for everyone else. Think about it – can you see visions of yourself celebrating New Year’s on a beach in Bermuda? Or how about heading to a safari in Africa instead of hosting the in-laws? The possibilities are endless … even if your pocket-book is not.

Here are some of the deals we found:

• New York, New York: The New Yorker Hotel is offering a pre-Thanksgiving special ($209 per night plus tax, November 23 to 25).
• Go West. The Eldorado Hotel & Spa in Santa Fe, (which will give you your third night free) is offering tremendous values.
• Hit the High Seas. A seven-night Southern Caribbean cruise on Caribbean Princess from $699! Fares for the December 21 departure of Caribbean Princess start at $699 per person. You’ll visit an island every day (including Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua, Tortola and St. Thomas), with many chances to relax on the beach, go shopping or enjoy water sports.

Happy travels!
