Couple Together for 59 Years Die Within Moments of Each Other
Daughters say it was the way it was supposed to happen.
It’s stories like this one that make you believe in the power of true love. James and Lolie Brackin of Defuniak Springs, Florida, had been married for 59 years. This past Saturday, after spending the night together in the same nursing home room and enjoying breakfast watching Animal Planet (their favorite network), they both passed away only moments apart.
James, 79, was an Army Veteran, while Lolie, 76, was a homemaker. They met at an ice skating rink when Lolie was just 16, and eloped that same year. They raised four daughters together and constantly referred to each other as “Honey.” So much so, in fact, that their grandchildren thought “Honey” was James’s real name.
“They completed each other,” said one of their daughters, Cindy Spence. “When they would walk somewhere, they would always hold hands.”
Over the past few years, the couple’s failing health had caused them to spend time apart – Lolie was in and out of the nursing home while James stayed at home to be with their youngest daughter. Last week, however, because of James’s weak condition, he was moved into his wife’s room in the nursing home.
While watching Animal Planet on Saturday, Lolie told a nurse’s aide, “I’m going to die today,” because she felt “different.” When the aide returned a little later, Lolie had stopped breathing. After that, it took just moments for nurses to realize that James had also passed away.
Their doctor believes it may have been the shock of learning that his wife had died that killed James, but the couple’s youngest daughter, Dana Troublefield, knows better.
“They say when you die, you’re immediately in the presence of Jesus,” she said. “I think [my mom] got up there and said, ‘Where’s my husband?’ And Jesus said, ‘Just a minute. I’m working on that.’” (NWF Daily News)
