Cynthia Nixon may be best known for playing a fiery, sex-obsessed redhead on Sex and the City, but it seems the actress is no ditz when it comes to politics and may have even picked up a few tips from her lawyer character. Fresh from wrapping the SATC sequel in Morocco, Cynthia, a long-time abortion rights activist, made her feelings clear about the recent healthcare bill amendments in an interview with CNN: She isn’t happy with them.
Speaking out against an amendment written by Democratic Rep. Bart Stupak of Michigan and Republican Rep. Joseph R. Pitts of Pennsylvania that would limit insurance coverage for abortions, Cynthia revealed that her own mother had an abortion when they were illegal and it wasn’t something she would want to wish on anyone.
“It’s a very basic female right that we need to protect,” she said. “What’s so frightening about this Stupak ban is that he’s found a backdoor way to basically not cover abortion for the vast majority of American women.”
“Abortion is a right I feel must not go away, and I feel like people aren’t mobilizing so much because it’s so complicated and it’s difficult to understand.” (CNN)
