Danny Gokey Goes Home
We’re down to the final two on American Idol!
From the very beginning of the season, when American Idol introduced us to Danny Gokey, America fell in love with him. Recently widowed, he said his wife had encouraged him to try out for the show. American Idol was to be his moment.
Danny’s moment has ended, at least on the Idol stage, as last night his fate was decided. Throughout the whole season, he had never been in the bottom three, but Danny’s luck turned sour last night. Could it have been because of his song choice, You are So Beautiful to Me by Joe Cocker? I’m thinking so.
Kris Allen and Adam Lambert sang hipper, “younger” songs by Kanye West and U2, and even though Danny performed at the top of his game (Paula stating that he left her breathless), I don’t think his performance had enough of that Idol ‘oomph’ fans look for when deciding the fate of the contestants. It just wasn’t enough.
Compare Danny’s soulful You Are So Beautiful to Me performance to the acoustic version of Kanye’s Heartless, performed by Kris Allen, and there’s no question which one rocked the stage this week. Even Randy Jackson said Allen’s version was better than Fray’s cover of it AND Kanye’s original.
And then you have Adam Lambert, who’s been a strong contender since the beginning, in style and performance (love that eyeliner!). He took U2’s One and made it his own. (By the way, Simon had to get permission from Bono for Adam to sing it – can you imagine that phone conversation?!). Kara said of Adam’s performance: “You proved you can take a song and do it in a completely different way, change up the melodies, change up the instrument, and make it UN-BE-LIEV-ABLE … UNBELIEVABLE!”
So, with two contestants left, one more big week of songs and the grand finale, at this point – especially with last night’s results – it’s anybody’s guess as to who will be the next American Idol. I was positive Danny would be one of two left standing, but the voters proved me wrong. And Simon must have felt similarly, as he ended the show last night by saying, “Nobody would have predicted this …A big ding dong coming up.”
Simon, really, a big ding dong? That’s what she said. (Sorry, couldn’t resist!)
Who do you think will be our next American Idol? Will it be quiet and unassuming Kris Allen, who has really surprised me in this competition, or Emo Rocker Adam Lambert, who shines every week?
It’s anybody’s Idol crown, and you can bet I’ll be watching as this big ding dong plays out!
