David Letterman publicly apologized to his wife, Regina Lasko, and his staff on the Late Show on Monday afternoon, calling his conduct “stupid.”
In his first appearance since revealing the extortion plot against him, he noted in his opening monologue that his wife “has been horribly hurt by my behavior, and when something happens like that, if you hurt a person and it’s your responsibility, you try to fix it,” he said.
He added: “At that point, there’s only two things that can happen: Either you’re going to make some progress and get it fixed, or you’re going to fall short and perhaps not get it fixed, so let me tell you folks, I got my work cut out for me.”
He also made time for some of his signature dry humor in the program and even laughed along when guests Martin Short and Steve Martin poked fun at him as well. During the second taping of the day, Letterman greeted the audience by saying, “Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to the late show. Are you sure you want to be seen with me?” (People)
