Defamation Suit Against Oprah to Go to Trial
Even the billionaire talk show host can’t avoid the courtroom.
Oprah Winfrey isn’t the kind of celebrity figure you would expect to see in a courthouse, but on March 29, the talk show queen will begin a two-week trial in Philadelphia where she will be defending herself and acting as a witness for a sex-abuse case at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.
The ex-headmistress of the school, Nomvuyo Mzamane, filed the lawsuit for defamation of character against Oprah after she had told parents of students, “I’m going to find a new head of the academy for the school. Dorm parents are gone, (Mzamane) is gone.” Oprah’s camp said the comment only reflected her opinion, but the judge believes it made Mzamane as well as the dorm parents look responsible for the sexual abuse that was going in at the school.
