Gotta Have It: Hair Bling
Who needs highlights when you can follow in the footsteps of Beyonce and try the hottest new trend for hair — bling.
Beyonce’s hair at the 2010 Grammy Awards had us doing a double take – was her hair actually sparkling?
It turns out Beyonce was experimenting with the hair industry’s latest trend: hair bling. This new twist on extensions adds shine to your hair by tying fine strands of sparkly colored tinsel to your own strands. Talk about being blinged out!
“Hair bling comes in a bunch of different colors,” says Joanna, who has just introduced them to her Hollywood Unisex Hair Salon in Westchester, NY. “You just pick the color you want, and then we attach the strands to your hair by tying it in little knots. It doesn’t take long at all and it lasts about two to four weeks. You can shower, blow-dry, flat-iron, and curl your hair, just as you normally would, with them in.”
Joanna charges $3 to tie in each strand of hair bling at her salon, but if you have lots of patience, you can do this look yourself at home. YouTube has video tutorials in a variety of languages that can teach you the technique.
Joanna says her clients request hair bling if they’re headed to a party, a formal event, or out to a club because it adds a perfect hint of sparkle. But we think we’ll try hair bling as an everyday pick-me-up!
