On Tuesday afternoon, an intense earthquake left the Caribbean island of Haiti in “total disaster and chaos,” said U.S. officials. Measuring 7.0 in magnitude, the quake toppled buildings, including the National Palace and the U.N. peacekeeping headquarters, and killed an untold number of people.
International Red Cross spokesman Paul Conneally estimated that one-third of Haiti’s 9 million population may need emergency aid and that it would take at least another day or two for officials to better understand the extent of the total damage.
Aftershocks continue to rumble through Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince where thousands gathered yesterday in public squares to sing hymns. (Huffington Post)
