On Wednesday, the competency hearing for Brian David Mitchell, the man stand accused of kidnapping and raping 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart in 2002, began to determine whether or not he will stand trial.
Among the people to testify was an FBI agent who conducted four interviews with Mitchell in 2003 after Smart was found and rescued. He testified that Mitchell said he expected the world to see him as a “child predator, sexual deviant and monster” and that Smart could have returned to her family at anytime and was never gagged.
