2. The flop that was Glitter
Whoever gave the green light to Glitter should be fined, or at the very least, kicked out of Hollywood. The movie, which was released in September 2001, was about a young woman trying to make it as a singer. It was Mariah’s first project after signing a contract with Virgin Records for a whopping $80 million. She released a soundtrack along with the movie, but they both tanked. Virgin Records was so appalled by the Glitter train wreck that they actually paid Mariah $28 million just to get rid of her and break her contract. Had she known Glitter was going to be such a disaster, maybe she would have reconsidered insuring her body for $10 million during filming. She has referred to the bomb as “something that had to happen in my life…. We all have to go through our tests to see how strong we are and come out on the other side.”
3. Her feud with Eminem
If you don’t already know about the feud between Eminem and Mariah, it’s best to just keep moving and not ask any questions. This epic battle began back in 2001 when Mariah denied having dated Eminem. The rapper hit back with a song on his 2002 album The Eminem Show, in which he asked, “What you tryin’ to be, my new wife? What you Mariah?” The following year the New York Post reported that Eminem had saved a bunch of voicemails that Mariah left for him and planned to use them in a song. Mariah shot back, saying it was like they were in a catfight. Uh, ya think? In 2006, Eminem took to his Sirius satellite radio show. “I can never deny her talent,” he told listeners, “but the fact that she denied we ever had something, that’s bad.” He also called her a diva and described himself as “a little more regular.”
But the battle really heated up when Eminem released the track “Bagpipes From Baghdad” earlier this year, in which he blatantly calls out Mariah and hubby Nick Cannon, saying that he “wants her back.” The couple retaliated with the music video “Obsessed,” where Mariah dresses up as a Slim Shady look-alike (above). But, determined to have the last word, in July Eminem released “The Warning,” another song attacking Nick and Mariah and threatening (yet again) to release those voicemails. Will this nightmare ever end?
4. Her over-the-top MTV Cribs episode
It was by far the most memorable episode in the history of MTV Cribs when Mariah’s Manhattan apartment was invaded by camera crews – memorable, because it was downright scary. During the hour-long season premiere in 2002, Mariah showed viewers a room that was dedicated solely to her fans (where she kept the mementos and scrapbooks that they had made her), her fully equipped hair salon, her massive closet and shoe room, how she could exercise in stilettos, and that she just loves taking bubble baths (and changing “ensembles” 20 times). She later revealed to V magazine that her bedroom is a humidified chamber to keep her vocal chords in peak condition: “Literally, I’ll have 20 humidifiers around the bed. Basically, it’s like sleeping in a steam room. The bed is all terry-cloth, the ceiling is pitched so the water can’t fall on my head, and it drips down to my side, and the TV is behind glass.”
