The Tipping List
Shop Don’t Stop – Maximize the Sales
5 things that should be on your list
-Lois Joy Johnson
I’m not an obsessive planner when it comes to shopping but this year I’m stalking the sales. My steely concentration equals that of a chess grandmaster but I’m carrying a stash of Dr. Bach’s Stress Remedy in my bag as backup.
Have you been in a major department store in the last week or so? If not, I urge you to go. It’s the ultimate fantasy/nightmare come true. It’s frustrating and exhilarating to see a Catherine Malandrino or Vera Wang jacket you craved only a month ago reduced to a week’s worth of Starbucks lattes – only not in your size.
It’s competitive and somehow soothing to stand at the barricades – er, racks – with fifty of your peers pawing through Vince cashmeres and Theory pencil skirts like they were the last clothes on earth. And yes the take 50% off the original 70% off sign is super but you need sharp elbows.
There’s that great Diane Von Furstenberg dress but that blonde is reaching for it! OMG she’s putting it back! The pressure to resist is great, because who knows maybe you’ll just pop into Saks and find it marked down another 10 percent … but then maybe not – so you end up buying two, thinking it’s the deal of a lifetime.
So what exactly am I looking for? I want things with momentum that will keep going and in colors that will keep me up. Fashion, like most things is 95 percent attitude. These wardrobe fresheners are on my tracking list and I’ve made a bet with a friend that I’ll find them all:
Cashmere cardigans – in crayon brights.
I did see a chartreuse grandpa cardigan by Theory and a cherry version by Alisha Levine on sale, both ridiculously marked down. Cardigans are the most versatile cashmeres to buy – I’ll layer them now over leggings, toss them over sleeveless dresses this spring.
A jumbo white patent hobo bag.
Just as versatile as black leather, but more fun to wear and a big pink continental size wallet to go in it (that I can easily locate in a hurry at the bottom beneath phones, sunglasses and makeup). I’ll have to chase down Tory Burch and Marc by Marc Jacobs accessories reduced.
Dressy gilded heels and jewel-studded flat metallic sandals are two of the most useful things to own but I hate paying full price for them. The sandals look great with white jeans and a tunic and the gold shoes dress up any LBD in seconds (just add big gold hoop earrings).
A vibrant floral or artsy print dress in a year-round blend.
I’ll be checking Milly, Shoshanna, Elie Tahari, David Meister, BCBG Max Azria and of course Diane Von Furstenberg. You can’t help but smile wearing a dress like that, and neither can anyone looking at you – no matter what the stock market is doing. I have an orange and white sleeveless Milly dress with white beading around the neck that I wore nearly every day last summer, and I’m hunting for a replacement.
A fitted wool schoolboy blazer, cropped at the hip in green or cobalt blue or ruby to wear with boyfriend jeans and booties.
I hear they’re at J. Crew and going fast – gotta run!
