Meet the New Guy
Archie Comics gets a gay character.
Archie, Betty and Veronica, those perpetual teenagers who have been hanging around Riverdale High for the past 60-plus years, are about to add a new friend to their circle—and yep, he’s gay.
High schooler Kevin Keller, billed as the “hot new guy” on the cover of Archie comics #202, is guaranteed to change the world of Archie and his rival girlfriends, Betty and Veronica, not to mention Jughead, Moose and Reggie.
Since the comic appeared in the 1940s, the red-haired Archie and his gang have lived in a land of tidy suburban houses and super-cute soda shops. But there have been signs of change recently: Archie is dating Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats. Why didn’t we read about this in the National Enquirer?
And although they’ve been frozen in time, Archie and his pals are pretty cool with the new guy. “Everyone seems to know where Kevin is coming from, except Veronica,” says Victor Gorelick, editor-in-chief of Archie Comics (and how great a job is that?). Well, Veronica was always a bit oblivious.
On a more serious note, another Archie Comics executive, Jon Goldwater, said, “Archie’s hometown of Riverdale has always been a safe world for everyone. It just makes sense to have an openly gay character in Archie comic books.”
In fact, the teens at Riverdale High are so not freaked out about it that Jughead ends up hanging out with Kevin. Says Gorelick, “They seem to have a connection as far as food goes.”
And the House of Archie isn’t done with change, either. They’re reportedly considering doing a storyline eerily similar to that of Jersey Shore.
Now that’s going way too far. (Washington Post)
