Miley Cyrus: Sweet – or Spoiled – Sixteen?
Teen celebs receive extravagant birthday gifts – what does that mean for the rest of us?
As we all know by now, teen-throb Miley Cyrus got a hand-me-down car for her Sweet 16 instead of the $75,000 Mercedes convertible she’d asked for. Poor thing has to drive a Porsche Cayenne jalopy. Can you imagine what the kids at school will say?
The whole incident has me wondering: Should we be proud of her daddy Billy Ray and his boldly unfashionable long hair for not indulging Miley in timeless German engineering? Or is he spoiling her rotten by bestowing the used Porsche … oh yeah, and a recording studio in her house?
BTW – if I were Miley’s publicist, I would have insisted she receive a 1990 Ford Taurus, a sleek ride that served me AND my sister well for a good eight years.
Other young celebs have received similarly astounding birthday gifts:
Oldest / obscurest Jonas Brother Kevin got a $225,000 white Lamborghini for his 21st birthday last summer. His little bro Nick Jonas only got a lousy Golden Retriever puppy named Elvis for his 16th. Guess that’s karma for breaking Taylor Swift’s heart, Nick.
Speaking of Senorita Swift, the country crooner asked merely for stationery and new glasses for her 19th birthday. Can we say grounded? (And p.s., Nick Jonas, girlfriend writes her own songs.) (And p.s. author of this article, you’ve just taken sides in a tween romance battle. Go take a long look at yourself in the mirror.)
Back on the celeb sibling circuit, Britney Spears plunked down serious coin shopping for her preggers sis, Jamie Lynn, last spring. What to buy for your 17-year-old knocked up sister? How about a few Christian Audigier handbags and pink Ed Hardy Tees? Britney celebrated her own birthday last week with a “circus themed” party for friends and family. Hate to break it to you, Brit, but that party started about three years ago. You were right in the center ring.
Speaking of pregnant younger sisters, Ashlee Simpson celebrated her 24th birthday last fall with a “white trash” party, which she attended while several months pregnant. Words. Stolen. From. My. Mouth.
Friends of High School Drool-sical star Zac Efron feted him with alcohol and tinted windows on his 21st birthday last October. Plus he had co-star Vanessa Hudgens for to dinner, and can anyone put a price tag on corporate-engineered romance?
We’re dying to know – what do you think about all this teen celebrity extravagance and gluttonous spending for even “regular” teen birthdays on shows like MTV’s My Super Sweet Sixteen?
What did you get for your 16th or 21st birthday? Does all this birthday extravagance in the media set an impossible standard for your own children?
