A new mineral-infused moisturizer is changing the face of skin care

-Paige Herman-Axel

Leslie BlodgettWhen a totally new, one-of-a-kind product like Bare Escentuals RareMinerals Purely Nourishing Facial Moisturizer comes across my desk, I instantly want to know more. In this case, I went straight to the source, bareMinerals founder Leslie Blodgett, to get the lowdown on this breakthrough product. What did I discover? That beauty can be found in very mysterious places.

Beauty Queen: What is this RareMinerals Complex?
Leslie Blodgett: Actually, the RareMinerals blend found me. About five years ago, I got a phone call from a farmer who happens to be a world-renowned expert in organic soil. He told me how he goes around the country collecting soil from deserts and forests, digging so deep that he calls it Jurassic soil because it’s never been touched before. It’s amazing how this farmer discovered how to blend soils from different places to get the highest levels of these minerals possible. After he extracted the minerals from his soil blend, he discovered that it contains all 72 minerals found in nature. Then, when he learned about my bareMinerals makeup, he wanted to talk because he thought we could use his magical minerals.

BQ: How did you make the jump from mineral makeup to skin care?
LB: After seeing how our bareMinerals makeup was changing the way women feel about their skin, I decided it was time to try my hand at skincare, I wasn’t about to use just any minerals-it wouldn’t make sense. It had to be special and be able to make a real difference in the skin. When I learned about this farmer’s mineral blend, I knew it was just the right active ingredient we needed. So we started with the Night Treatment, which is essentially a potent powder form of the RareMinerals blend, and it’s now our star product.

Leslie BlodgettBQ: How does the RareMinerals Purely Nourishing Moisturizer work?
LB: It took a really long time to develop this moisturizer. We wanted to put the RareMinerals concentrate in a moisturizer and make it as effective as possible. During the development process, we discovered that when the minerals were mixed with water, they had an electrolyte effect, meaning they act like sports drinks for your skin. Instead of the water diluting the minerals, the minerals help deliver the water into the skin to replenish, hydrate and actually plump the skin. For extra hydration, we also added in an extract from the Resurrection plant that is found in South Africa. This plant is unique because it looks dead when there’s no water, but when water hits it, it comes back to life within hours, transforming from a bush that looks dead to a lush, green plant. This extract allows our moisturizer to have a similar effect on the skin.

BQ: What benefits does RareMinerals Purely Nourishing Moisturizer have on the skin?
LB: Any skin type can use it, even those that are more oily since the minerals actually help the skin act more normal. This product is literally for anyone and everyone who wants smoother skin, to minimize the appearance of their pores and add a natural luminosity to their skin.

BQ: How does the RareMinerals skin care work with the bareMinerals makeup?
LB: The beauty of RareMinerals used with bareMinerals is that women get a natural glow and the plumping benefits of these wonderful minerals around the clock. It’s like feeding your skin 24 hours a day.

BQ: What’s next for the RareMinerals Complex?
LB: In addition to the Night Treatment, Renew & Reveal Facial Cleanser and Moisture Burst Facial Mist, we’re extending the line. This year we’re launching an eye cream and a serum, and we have products in development through 2011. It takes a really long time to develop products, but we hope that there will be a RareMinerals product for the whole body.

In other big news, we’ll be coming out with a bareMinerals Matte Foundation that contains a very special ingredient. Stay tuned to BettyConfidential.com for all the details!
