She Wears the Pants
…and the ballet flats, too
-Lois Joy Johnson
We’re used to seeing women in politics in androgynous pantsuits, so wearing one is not revolutionary on the D.C. fashion front.
But, Michelle Obama broke with First Lady eveningwear tradition at this week’s White House dinner when she showed up in sexy black velvet pants and a jacket, nipped and cut to fit her sleek, nearly six-feet-tall silhouette.
There’s something mysterious, sensual and so French about black velvet. Was the First Lady channeling Yves Saint Laurent’s famous “Le Smoking” look?
Adding a gimongous brooch–and flats that appear to be Manolos, Mrs. Obama is giving all the runway supermodels a real run for their money.
This week may have marked the first time we saw her in pants for an evening event, but on the campaign trail, they were a staple of her travelling wardrobe.
We love her capris-and-flats combo, especially when she hopped off a plane in skinny khakis–slim as leggings and cropped at the ankle–and paired not with an expected button-down or polo but with layered cardigans in soft, feminine colors.
