What Would Debbie Do?
My Friends Don’t Like Him But…
Many have told me that my boyfriend of nine months is a jerk, and that I shouldn’t put up with the mind games he plays. Although I have heard this several times, I want to help him. Do you have any pointers on how I can talk to him without making him angry? He has a quick temper and usually likes his name-calling and break-ups. I want him to realize there’s a lot more ahead of him and he needs to control his anger and accept that life is waiting for him.
Yes, I have some pointers: RUN!
Often we dismiss our friends’ opinion as insignificant in affairs of the heart, but it sounds like in this situation, even you seem to admit he’s a jerk. Your “kind-heartedness” in attempting to help him is misplaced. The only way to help him, is to leave him. That will show him that you can’t treat someone with disrespect and expect them to take it. He’ll only change when HE realizes that something is wrong. You can talk till your blue in the face-it probably won’t help. Actions speak louder than words. That’s what I would do.
