Substitute for Bold Lips and Smoky Eyes?

Dear Beauty Queen: I have really white alabaster skin, full lips and hazel eyes. I’m a bit afraid to try a bright red lipstick or gloss or smoky eyes because they have a tendency to look kind of clownish on me. Please recommend a style I could try – I love those looks and I’d like to find a version that works well with my light skin.

Beauty Queen: I know smoky eyes and bold red lips can be a little intimidating, especially if you’re a makeup novice – but that doesn’t mean you can’t make these looks your own. I’d recommend starting light, meaning wear a smoky eye but in a lighter color. (In fact, this trend was all over the spring runways.)

Instead of a black or dark grey, try the look in a more muted brown. The same rules apply: Start with a liner, then blending lighter and darker hues of the same color. (Check out YouTube for great instructions!) The softer color means less drama, but it will still make a statement – especially against your light skin. As for the lips, start with a wash of color. I really like Bobbi Brown’s Ruby Sugar Shimmer Lip Gloss. It gives a nice pop of color and shine without the risk of looking like a circus act!
