After a five year-long custody battle, New Jersey resident David Goldman was finally reunited with his son Sean on Christmas Eve, in a final twist to the story that not even Hollywood producers could have hoped for.
“It’s a miracle,” Goldman said in an interview that’s scheduled to air Dec. 28 on the Today show. “There was 364 other days that [it] could’ve been, if he ever were going to come home. But it was Christmas Eve. Somebody’s up there for sure.”
In 2004, Sean’s mother Bruna Bianchi took him to Brazil for what was supposed to be a 2-week vacation, but ended up staying and remarrying another man, after calling David and telling him she wanted a divorce. She died last year in childbirth after giving birth to Sean’s half-sister Chiara.
The boy’s other relatives, including his Brazilian stepfather and grandmother, fought to keep him in South America; however, a Brazilian court ruled last week that the 9-year-old should be returned to the custody of his natural father in the United States.
“One of my friends said, ‘You know, if some Hollywood producer was gonna write this…and have it come to the end how it did, they would say, ”What are you kidding? No one would believe that,’ ” Goldman said in the interview, which will also air on Dateline on Jan. 8. “But it’s amazing. It’s truly incredible.” (People)
