The latest installment of the Twilight series may not be critically acclaimed, but fans of the fantasy stories don’t seem to mind.
New Moon, which opened on Friday, took in just over $140 million in its first weekend, making it the third-biggest opening weekend in movie history.
It came in just behind The Dark Night, which earned $158.4 million during its 2008 opening weekend, and Spider-Man 3, which earned just over $151 million during its opening weekend in 2007.
New Moon doubled the first-weekend gross of last year’s Twilight, and half of the cash from New Moon’s opening came from pre-sales.
