Whether it’s sleek and smooth, like at J. Mendel (above) and Vivienne Tam, or loose and laid-back, as seen at Diesel Black Gold and Charlotte Ronson, straight hair is making make a big comeback this fall. “Designers are making clothes that aren’t so romantic at the moment,” said celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson, backstage at the J. Mendel show. Gibson is one of the stars of TV’s What Not To Wear, has styled countless magazine photo shoots and editorials as well as styling the likes of Angelina Jolie, Renee Zellwegger and Joy Bryant’s. He told us that a tougher economy calls for more serious hair. “The clothes are for a much stronger woman [this fall], so the hair has to match that strong look.” To get this fall’s super-shiny locks, Gibson suggests spraying L’Oreal Professional Texture Expert Infinium 3 on your brush, then running it through your hair to evenly distribute the product. “It’ll give you shine and hold. It’s amazing,” he says, adding that busy women shouldn’t feel that they need to wash their hair every morning, and can keep it looking fresh using his Hair Sheets. Got curly hair? Don’t fret. Some models at the Richard Chai LOVE and Diesel Black Gold shows wore their straight hair slightly tousled, so there’s no need to cart a flat iron wherever you go.

To find the hottest nail colors for fall, look no further than… fungi? “We’re seeing mushroomy colors for fall,” Pattie Yankee from Dashing Diva Nails told us backstage at Tahari. At Tahari (above), the models wore Dashing Diva’s Fashion Week on their nails. “The mushroom tones look pretty decent on almost every skin tone except for darker skin tones… I would recommend something that’s a bit more taupey [in that case].” Yankee said that the trend of “coordinating polish with skin tones” is likely to continue through the fall, but if you’re not loving the murky tones, there’s good news. “Metallics are still around, along with dark blues, like navy.”
