Now You See Him, Now You Don't

A woman seeks advice about a short-term boyfriend who seems to have disappeared.

The Disappearing Act

Dear ASK REAL GUYS: I met a man and we spent every day together for about a month until he started disappearing for four days at a time. He always claimed be to away at a “funeral,” as two of his family members supposedly died within a two week period. I have yet to see an obituary, and although he did send me a very short e-mail around Labor Day we have not spoken in over two weeks. I feel that I deserve an explanation, whether or not it’s a positive one. My question is: How can someone claim to love you and then just drop off the face of the earth? Heck a one-night stand would have been easier; at least I would have known what I was in for ahead of time.

Avery: It sounds like you’ve figured out the situation on your own. You met the guy, you had a fling, and now he’s moved on. Since you had spent so much time with him initially, he’s really not a very nice guy to have disappeared on you. If he really did lose two family members within two weeks, you could understand how he may need some time (a couple of weeks) to spend time with family, etc., but since he’s disappeared since Labor Day, it’s evident that he’s moved on which is what I’d suggest that you do too.
