One Betty Cuts a Rug with Workout Videos
Get your fitness on, no gym required
Let me start by saying that I am not a gung-ho exercise queen by any stretch of the imagination. I have only stepped foot in a gym with the intent to WORK IT once, and even then I didn’t follow through because my friend’s special-guest pass had expired (thanks, Wendy).
However, now that I have tested Acacia’s workout DVDs, I have been inspired to drop a few pounds and get healthier! And it was nice to be able to dip my toes into the exercise world from the comfort of my own living room. Acacia launched in 2006 to provide customers with authentic and original yoga, fitness and wellness programming. If user-friendly is what Acacia is going for, then it’s succeeding!
Here’s what I thought of a few of their titles:
Hemalayaa: Bollywood Booty
I loved this one! It was nice how the movements were described prior to performance time. The motions were fun, flowy and creative. “Turning lightbulbs” was a cute concept (a hand gesture that – you guessed it – mimics changing a bulb) and the “painting the wall” (throwing one hand to the side and then the other, in a downward streak) was strangely satisfying. I also welcomed Hemalayaa’s all-across-the-board approach, as she repeatedly stated some form of “If you can’t quite get this yet, go slow again.” Relaxing, doable and fun is how I would best describe the workout.

I had a challenging time with this video. The back of the DVD case promises you will trim your waistline and shed unwanted pounds; I say true, if you can keep up! Although it didn’t seem ideal for beginners (or for those of us who aren’t exercise-savvy) it WAS very upbeat and chock-full of positive reinforcements. Encouragements like “There ya go, dance with that body! Beautiful!” were featured throughout, which a reluctant groover such as me will surely appreciate. I enjoyed section two the most, the ‘Spicy Salsa.’ The steps were more broken down here, and it was easier for me to follow along; beforehand, I felt like I was on the set of a sitcom, me being the odd woman out while everyone else was doing their thing.
On the Betty Rate-o-Meter rating: 3 (partially due to my apparent lack of groove).
Shiva Rea: Flow Yoga for Beginners
Having a crappy day? Give this one a go! The setting was gorgeous (a good portion was filmed by a waterfall), and the overall feeling was super-mellow and soothing. Stress begone! And the best part? The video stuck with its original “for beginners” approach. I had never tried any form of yoga, but now I am heavily considering looking into more.
