Is the Illinois Governor’s wife a modern-day Lady Macbeth?
-Mary Dixie Carter
In the mind-boggling scandal involving Illinois Governor Blagojevich, his wife Patricia (referred to as a “modern-day Lady Macbeth” by the Chicago Tribune) appears to be an accomplice, if not an instigator. The FBI recorded several damning conference calls, such as one in which Patti’s voice is heard in the background suggesting, in a less than decorous fashion, that the Tribune Co. ownership needs to fire some of the newspaper’s editors (who haven’t been friendly to the Governor) if they want support in selling Wrigley Field (owned by the Tribune Co.) “Hold up that f—ing Cubs sh—… F— them.”
In the same two-hour conference call, the Governor, whose narcissism rivals OJ’s, said: “The immediate challenge [is] how do we take some of the financial pressure off of our family.” Referring to Barack Obama’s vacated Senate Seat, he said, “It’s a f—ing valuable thing. You just don’t give it away for nothing.”
Rod goes on to name potential sources of income that might alleviate his family’s financial stress. For example, Barack Obama should get Patti a job on a corporate board, which would bring in approximately $150K. In response, Patti said she considered herself qualified for that sort of job and would take it immediately.
Some bloggers are calling the Lady Macbeth comparison unfair. A gender-based stereotyping just because Patti Blagojevich is ambitious and doesn’t shy away from spicy language.
Personally, I agree. It is unfair … to Lady Macbeth.
What do you think of Patti Blagojevich and her sleazy husband?
