Pentagon Shooter, John Patrick Bedell, Dead
Bedell open fired at the Pentagon’s subway entrance last night, injuring two police officers before he was shot and killed.
Last night at about 6:40pm, John Patrick Bedell, 36, approached the Pentagon near the building’s subway station entrance. When two Pentagon Force Protection Agency officers asked him for identification to enter the Defense Department building, he began to open fire with a 9 millimeter semiautomatic weapon, injuring the two officers before he was quickly gunned down.
The shooting took less than a minute, with one officer sustaining a thigh wound, the other a shoulder wound. Bedell suffered head wounds, which killed him en route to the hospital. The officers have been released from the hospital and are expected to fully recover.
According to the Chief of Pentagon police, Richard Keevill, Bedell appeared to not be a threat as he was dressed in a suit and did not appear to have “hostile intent.” However, anti-government comments and audio recordings have been discovered on the internet from a user named JPatrickBedell, who’s basic information matches Bedell’s. The user expressed resentment towards the military concerning doubts about the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Police believe this may have been what fueled Bedell’s attack last night, but are not confirming it as a motive at this time.
Originally from Hollister, California, Bedell spent the past few weeks driving to Arlington, VA from his hometown, stopping several times along the way. Last night, he parked his car, filled with ammunition, in a parking garage nearby the Pentagon, and approached the secured building on foot. (Huffington Post)
