An Arkansas woman was stunned to learn that she was pregnant with her second child only a few weeks after learning she was pregnant with her first.
Julia Grovenburg’s two babies, conceived about two and a half weeks apart, are not twins but, in fact, a rare case of superfetation, or conceiving while already pregnant, doctors said.
“This is an unusual and rare condition, but the possibility is real. It can only be confirmed after delivery by chromosomal and metabolic studies on the babies,” said Dr. Mciahel Muylart, Grovenburg’s obstetrician.
Although superfetation is often dangerous for the younger child who may be forced to be born prematurely, in Grovenburg’s case, a two and half week difference should not present many risks, experts said. (NY Daily News)
