Saudi Woman Lashes Out at Muslim Clerics on Live TV
Hissa Hilal’s poem earned her a standing ovation and a place in a poetry competition’s finals, to be aired Wednesday.
While participating in an Arabic poetry competition last week, a Saudi woman recited a scathing poem aimed at Muslim preachers who “sit in the position of power” but are “frightening” citizens with their religious ruling.
Although Hissa Hilal has received several death threats for speaking her mind, she continues to stand her ground.
“My poetry has always been provocative,” she told The Associated Press. “It’s a way to express myself and give voice to Arab women, silenced by those who have hijacked our culture and our religion.”(Huffington Post)
