A stunning announcement from researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles this week is sure to give some people hope. In a report published on Monday, UCLA scientists revealed that human stems cells can be engineered to kill HIV.
“We have demonstrated in this proof-of-principle study that this type of approach can be used to engineer the human immune system, particularly the T-cell response, to specifically target HIV-infected cells,” said lead investigator Scott Kitchen in a statement.
Last March, President Obama lifted an eight-and-a-half year ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research, making it possible for this potential break-through. (Advocate)
