Attention Wii fans: Food Network debuted a brand new game last week for the aspiring chef in all of us, called Cook or Be Cooked. This multi-player game features 30 real recipes that you need to prepare like an expert chef. Use your wii remote to chop, slice, and dice your ingredients like the pros. And here’s a Stir-Fried Chicken and Broccoli recipe from Cook or Be Cooked that you can prepare tonight!

Prep time 30 minutes, makes 4 servings

Stir-Fried Chicken and BroccoliIngredients:

1 bunch broccoli (about 1 pound)

2 cloves garlic

1 1-inch piece fresh ginger

1 pound chicken stir-fry strips (or whole boneless, skinless chicken breasts; see Cook’s Note, below)

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon sugar

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon cornstarch

1 ¼ teaspoons kosher salt, plus additional for seasoning

1 tablespoon dry sherry

1 tablespoon dark sesame oil

? cup chicken broth or water

3 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 tablespoons water

Freshly ground black pepper


1. Cut broccoli tops into bite-size florets. Peel and thinly slice the broccoli stems, keeping stems and florets separate. Smash, peel, and chop garlic; peel and chop ginger.

2. Toss the chicken strips, half the garlic and ginger, the soy sauce, sugar, 1 teaspoon of the cornstarch, 1 teaspoon of the salt, the sherry, and sesame oil in a bowl. Marinate at room temperature for 15 minutes. Dissolve the remaining cornstarch in the broth or water.

3. Heat a large nonstick skillet over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. When the oil is hot, add the broccoli stems and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the florets, the remaining garlic and ginger, and 2 tablespoons water. Season with remaining slat and some black pepper. Stir-fry until the broccoli is bright green but still crisp, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a plate.

4. Get the skillet good and hot again and add remaining 2 tablespoons vegetable oil. Add the chicken and marinade. Stir-fry until the chicken begins to brown, about 4 minutes. Return the broccoli to the pan and toss to heat through. Stir in the reserved cornstarch mixture and bring to a boil to thicken. Add a few tablespoons water or stock if the sauce seems too thick. Season with salt and black pepper to taste. Mound the stir-fry on a serving platter or divide among 4 plates; service with rice, if desired.

Cook’s note: If using whole chicken breast, freeze for 20 to 30 minutes, then slice thinly across the grain to make strips. Thaw before using.
