Christina Gutierrez, an office worker at Hamilton High School in Los Angeles was saddened when she found that she was being laid off from her job due to low seniority but not as much as the 500 students who staged a protest in order to get her back her job.
The four organizers of the protest, seniors Jimmy Biblarz, Noemi Rodriguez, David Kamins and Maya Festinger, had personal reasons for wanting Ms. Guiterrez back.
“She just actually cares,” said Jimmy’s younger sister Veronica. “Not like the fake pretending to care. . . . She takes it seriously.”
After the protest and additional presentation at a school district board meeting, Miss G., as she is affectionately referred to by the students, was able to return to the school in a substitute position.
On her first day back, students greeted her with balloons and cupcakes.
“This isn’t about me,” she said. “They should feel so empowered. I am so proud of them.” (LA Times)
