The Pinup is Reborn
All in the name of charity
-April Daniels Hussar
Those altruistic celebrity ladies … what will they think of next? In a sheer display of bravery and selflessness, 23 Hollywood A-listers agreed to strip down and pose seductively in a modern Vargas girl calendar book … complete with boas, fishnets and liberal Photoshopping.
The cause: Oxfam America. The product: Hollywood Pinups, the latest coffee table book du jour (who wouldn’t want to browse through a collection of impossibly perfect and flawless, sexily posed women whilst lounging on the couch in your sweats?). The participants: Everyone from Susan Sarandon (who looks incredible for her any age – airbrushing or not) to the Olsen twins (okaaay) to Kate Hudson (virtually unrecongnizeable), Cindy Crawford, Angie Harmon and Téa Leoni.
According to the artist / photographer Timothy White, he chose a variety of women ranging in age because he “didn’t want women [that looked like] 15-year-olds. I wanted bodies that were very different. That was my only criteria.”
But, according to the Los Angeles Times, since pinups are, well, fantasy, White took liberal artistic license to “stretch, manipulate, airbrush and color-saturate to his heart’s content.”
So, apparently, White wanted a variety of famous women, all in various displays of fake perfection and impossible flawlessness. Fantasy to the Nth degree, if you will.
Exactly what I want on MY Christmas list.
